Cheryl Kramer-Milder, Artistic Director for the County Seat Theater Company
Cheryl Kramer-Milder is the founder of the County Seat Theater Company, the only full season community theater in Carlton County. It began in 1987 as a fund raiser for the Carlton High School band. The group became its own nonprofit theater company after three years and grew steadily over the years in its three location moves from Carlton High School, to the Old Country Church Theater in rural Carlton and now in its new beautiful Encore Performing Arts Center and Gallery in Cloquet, MN. This was a huge undertaking involving a major capital campaign and gathering community support. Cheryls focus has always been on presenting high quality performances and nurturing new stage artists and directors.
Cheryl has been involved as an actor and/or director with the Lofte Community Theater in Nebraska, the Swea City Patent Pending Players in Iowa, Civic Summer Theater in Fairmont, MN and Renegade Comedy Theater, Access Theater and the Duluth Playhouse in Duluth. She also has directed for several high schools including Carlton and Barnum. She has also served on a number of arts advocacy boards and committees, including the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council.
Cheryl Kramer-Milder has been the driving force behind the County Seat Theater Company for over 26 years. The theater has come a long way starting as a single show fundraiser, to a full season community theater with thousands of patrons attending shows each year with a budget nearing $150,000.00. She does it all directs, acts, designs, fundraises, writes grants and gives more of her personal time and money to the theater more than any other individual I know.
Under Cheryls leadership the County Seat Theater Company has been represented at a number of the past MACT Festivals. With her production of Wiley and the Hairy Man in 2011 the troupe won Best of Festival and a number of individual awards at the state and regional level. Awards were also received at the national level and the group was invited to two inter-national festivals. In 2012 Cheryl and her crew participated in the World Festival of Childrens Theatre in Toyama, Japan. Without her dedication and leadership this would not have been possible.
