began her life in theatre in Toronto where she was born, but was centered largely at the Duluth Playhouse for more than 30 years. It included a concert reading group in England; the Fairbanks Light Opera Company which she founded and directed; the Superior (Wisconsin) Community Players; and acting and directing at other regional theatres.
Her "bio" card in the Duluth Playhouse files describes her local participation as "direction, set design, set decoration, costumes, millner, program cover design, program copy". Maj-lis has directed 30 or so shows for the Duluth Playhouse, which has a policy of offering only one show per season to a director. She has also starred in more than 10 productions, served on committies, founded and directed concert reading groups, and served as a Playhouse outreach performer. She has won the Playhouse Special Achievemnt Award and the Acting Award.
Her directorial skills have run the gamut from farce to drama, from Bedfull of Foreigners to One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. Her acting abilities have found the same strenghts and variety, from Laura in Solid Gold Cadillac to Clair in The Visit.
Acording to fellow Playhouse volunteer Jean Endrizzi, "numbers and lists do not tell the story. It is the many, many contacts with people whi learn to love the stage and to have confidence in their performances, on stage and back stage, that speaks so highly of Maj-Lis. She is, truly, a Woman for All Seasons ".
Maj-Lis died in June of 2006 at the age of 91.
